Not going to talk about the T word, but I am sending hope for your 401k.
Now — let’s talk about something FUN: The What Would Bob Dylan Do game.
I like the idea that we’re all the creative directors of our lives, but sometimes that can be a tall order. Should I launch this or that? Stay here or go there? Spend or splurge? Lots of choices.
Mentors are great, but the ones we can access directly aren’t equipped to guide us toward a life that’s hugely different from the one we’re already living. What do you do if you’re craving more?
Introducing the Board of Directors (In Absentia 😉
Here’s how it works:
1) Take a step back and reflect on whose lives or work hugely inspire you. You read their stories and just think, ‘Wow – that’s a goddamn life right there.; These should be people you love and respect. You don’t have to name them all at once, let it come over time.
2) Create a visual representation of your board—photos, quotes, keywords. Put it near your computer, on your phone background, or turn it into cards you can shuffle and pull from when you need guidance.
3) Create a Ritual for “Board Meetings.” Once a week or month, bring a challenge or desire to the board. Call the meeting to order and ask, “What would each board member advise me right now?”
4) Get an AI involved for more input. Use a prompt like ‘Act like you’re Bob Dylan, and advise me on my layoff program’ and see what comes out. Some of my gems:
- “Hand your participants a notebook and a harmonica and let them wander into the forest. That’s coaching, baby.” – Bob Dylan
- “Step away from your devices. Put your hands on the earth. You won’t find the next step on a spreadsheet.” – John Muir
- “Are you helping people imagine not just what’s next for them, but what kind of world they want to build?” – Barack Obama
- “You got laid off from YouTube and built THIS? That’s your headline.” – Sara Blakely
So fun right? Bringing a little creativity into life is wildly enlivening. If you’re feeling stale, not sure what direction to take, or just craving a cool weekend plan, ask your board
