Real talk – I got so fed up with Elon and his chainsaw antics that I launched a pay-what-you-can coaching program for laid-off workers yesterday. The activist in me took over!
As always, I encourage you to take action when you see something you don’t think is right. After 15 years of working in social impact, I believe the best thing we can do to heal the world is take the actions that feel true for us. We’re not powerless, and we all have WAY more influence than we think.

Introducing Time Away for Laid-Off Workers
Layoff culture feels wild right now, and I’m not sure we’ve called that out enough.
Big tech gets more ruthless and less caring each year–from accelerated vesting offers and caring PR statements in 2023 to labeling workers as poor performers and cutting off access in 2025. Now Elon’s taken that approach into our federal government, laying off 30k workers in 4 weeks.
It’s not that layoffs should never happen; it’s how we’re doing them – hastily, gruffly, and with mocking disrespect – that’s just not right.
Layoffs hurt human beings. A lot.
Even if you were expecting it, took a package, or hated your job.
You might feel shame, despair, anger, and massive amounts of fear. You may worry about what your former coworkers are saying, and lord knows it’s stressful to sort out what to say on LinkedIn.
I know because I was laid-off, too!
I saw it coming, and my team was exceedingly caring, but I was still shocked, hurt, and angry. I had begun re-skilling but was focused on starting a family, not orchestrating a career change.
It’s been a year since it happened, and I’m grateful I had the tools to work through it. I was able to:
- Avoid the temptation to get another tech job
- Learn new skills and overcome fears of failure
- Start a profitable business with a full slate of clients
- Continue with my plan to start a family, albeit differently
