I’ve been a little scrunched up lately – over-traveled, under-slept, and finally hit by wedding stress. As I was dancing around my house just now (really – I am still sweating), I remembered I’ve got to dance more.
Dance when the news is tough to watch. Dance when you’re super stressed. Dance when you feel insecure. Dance through the grief. Dance to fully express your joy.
Humans love to dance because it’s enlivening – we feel self-expressed, silly, joyful, and playful. Chemically, we also get a huge boost – dancing provides:
- Dopamine: To enhance mood, motivation, and long-term memory and contribute to the pleasurable “high” often felt after dancing.
- Serotonin: To regulate mood and promote feelings of well-being and happiness.
- Endorphins: To act as natural painkillers and mood elevators, reducing stress and creating a sense of euphoria.
- Oxytocin: To promote social bonding and trust, especially in group or partner dances.Source: Kovalsky, T. (2020, May 6). Dance on the Brain! Arts on the Brain – ScholarBlogs. Emory University. Link
