The calm plan for people with a lot going on

Last year, I wanted to better understand my client’s top issues, so I used AI to rank them. The result made me a bit sad – it’s overwhelm due to workload, life admin, and competing priorities.

Overwhelm takes us out of the present moment and limits our joy, levity, and spontaneity. I don’t want that for you! Or me. Here’s what I’ve seen work best when the O word hits:

Calm your body first

Slow down. Look away from your screen (honestly, the attention economy is so stressful). Consider going outside if you can and take a nice, deep breath. Even better, take a walk to gain perspective.

Notice what you’re thinking

Take a look at your thought patterns. Are you taking more responsibility than you need to? Have you gotten caught in overwork or over-analysis? Is people-pleasing or fear driving you? These are common culprits of overwhelm. Try to become aware of your thoughts and gently challenge them. It’s totally normal to revert to stuff like this when you’re stressed!

Take a step back

What result(s) are most important this week, and what’s the fastest route to getting there? Break the result(s) into smaller tasks, then book those tasks across the week. Aim for just 3 tasks per day, and get them done first thing.

Protect your time going forward

Time is a non-renewable asset, and it’s ok to guard yours like a hawk. This might mean learning how to say no more, quitting time-suck habits, or just improving your organization and systems overall next year. (I sure plan to do that!)

Last, come home to what matters. (You matter! Your joy and peace matter!) Will whatever is stressing you out be relevant in 5 years? Probably not. Have a hot chocolate and relax. It’s all going to work out.

To more fun and less stress next year,
Kit
