When my husband and I moved, I got to practice my favorite tool – The Desire Map. I created this about 10 years ago and have been using it religiously since.
It’s wildly fun and straightforward, and acts like a shortcut to more fulfilling, yummy days.
Start by thinking about a topic and mind map your desires around it. For example, when moving into a new home, my fiancé and I created one together with four categories: new habits, vibe/energy, gatherings, and organization.
In the new habits category, we aligned on creating a weekly, monthly, and quarterly cleaning calendar. For gatherings, we realized throwing brunches might be fun, and over-the-top birthday celebrations (balloons + tiered cakes + Stevie Wonder’s Birthday Song). In the organization category, stuff like ‘badass fridge game’ made the list. You get the idea.
Here’s why doing this can lead to more fulfillment, fairly quickly:
- We’re sorting out how to apply our values to our home, and living our values almost instantly creates more purpose and alignment.
- We developed new habits to cultivate, which will lead to growth for both of us. Ongoing growth is also key to feeling fulfilled.
- We’re thinking through how we can create joy and aliveness, which will drive meaning and satisfying relationships in our lives.
- We’re clearer on where we want to put our energy, which will make it less likely we get stuck in stagnant ruts.
Put it all together, and you wake up with more days that feel like ‘I love this life’ days. You’re creating and then living the life you want.
If you want to try it, explore setting desires across each aspect of your life, such as finances, health, friends and family, fun, and spirituality. You could also jot down what would make a great summer for you. Another idea is to do them for your career, noting down near-term and long-term aspirations.
You might be surprised how shockingly within reach your version of ‘good life’ is.
I hope you enjoy it if you try it! Email me if you have questions 🙂
