I’m on my third career change in three decades, and I’ve experienced more joy and more wealth each time I’ve made a change. I know it’s painful to realize you’re not living the life you meant to be living — or to be scared that maybe the career you’re in isn’t going to make sense in a rapidly changing world. We outgrow ourselves and sometimes need to redesign our world to match who we’ve become or where the world is going. It’s not easy or simple, but it is exponentially more rewarding than pretending everything is fine while a sense of misalignment simmers in the background.
At 26, I quit a top advertising job to travel the world alone because I realized I didn’t care that much about hawking makeup. I saw extreme poverty while traveling in Cambodia and devoted myself to social impact work for the next 15 years. Making the change from marketing to advocacy was brutal — no one took me seriously. But I was relentless and ended up at Google.org in my 30s, leading YouTube’s Mental Health Initiative, Google Environment Marketing, and Grow with Google. It was in my final role leading brand strategy for YouTube that I realized I was in the wrong place again. I could see the writing on the wall with AI and knew I needed to move. I started reskilling as a coach in 2023, got laid off in 2024, and launched my coaching business later that year.
My business took off quickly and I landed a book deal in 2025. Being true to yourself works — and so does being honest about where the world is going.
Hiding in “I don’t know”
Telling yourself what you’ve got is good enough (the golden handcuffs are real, I know)
Applying for jobs you don’t want
Every other month, going back and forth between getting a job vs. being a solopreneur
Believing you can’t make money doing the thing you love
Endlessly analyzing options, weighing the pros and cons — stuck in a nonstop spin cycle
Watching others go for what they want, admiring their courage and wishing you could do the same
But I have good news — you can go for it too. And we’re going to do it together.
Right now you’ve got two choices.
You can keep on keepin’ on and spend the next year telling yourself what you’ve got is good enough, or that maybe next year, when the economic and technological outlook is clearer, you’ll go for it. You can keep watching as your friends and peers make moves you wish you were making.
Or, you can decide that now is the time you’re going to go for it, and you’re going to invest in giving yourself the support you need. We don’t succeed alone — we succeed when we’re deeply supported, in a community of like-minded leaders, and equipped with all the skills we need to take our lives to the next level.
The most common phrase we hear in response to Time Away is ‘life-changing.’ Investing in a program like Time Away will 100% change the trajectory of your life. Over the course of six months, you’ll peel back layers of hurt and pain, build intimate relationships that are unlike anything else in your life, and feel more proud of yourself than you have in years. You’ll feel prepared for whatever happens next.
